According to Simon Silver, a professor in the department of microbiology and immunology in the University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Medicine, who studies bacterial resistance to metals:

Silver ions bind to proteins on the cell membranes of bacteria, and disrupt their respiratory chains. "Respiratory chains" are chain reactions that allow bacterial cells to produce the energy molecule ATP. ATP is the energy molecule that all life depends upon. The cell then bursts and dies.

Silver ions work in a similar fashion against viruses, too, by binding to proteins on their so-called coats.

Unlike bacteria and viruses, the cells of most multi-cellular organisms, such as humans, use mitochondria for respiration that are tucked safely inside the cell and well protected from exposure to potential hazards like silver ions.

For reasons that aren't fully understood, Silver ions also seem to work against fungi. The lack of understanding is derived from the nature of fungi cells because fungi cells are more like human cells than bacteria or viruses.

Historically, silver's medicinal uses, both public and private, date back over 6000 years.

The 20th century has seen medicinal silver put to use in many forms:

  •  Silver salts (e.g. Silvernitrate, Silver phosphate, Silveriodide, etc.) never achieved widespread use due to staining (29), corrosive, irritating and astringent characteristics (14), a general ineffectiveness compared to electro-colloidal silver compounds (23), an increased level of toxicity compared to colloidal silver or silver proteins, may be destructive to human lymphocytes (16).
  • Silver compounds (e.g. Silver sulfadiazine ie: "Silvadene" used in hospitals to prevent infection of serious burns (6), effective against dozens of bacteria (14,5,8) and numerous strains of herpes virus(7), malaria (protozoal Plasmodium berghei)(27), yeasts including 50 strains of Candida albicans (26). ., Silverarsphenamine, zinc-Silver allantoinate) (14).
  • Colloidal Silver, either chemically or electrically produced  (Just microscopic particles of silver and water, not a compound) (10,14).
  •  Mild silver protein and strong silver protein (Silver combined with protein exhibits a broad spectrum of action. It has been claimed to kill some 650 different disease organisms (29).  In some laboratory tests, mold or yeast has been reported to grow on the outside of the protein surrounding the silver particle, leading this author to believe that use of silver protein products is risky.

Silver has been used to:

  • purify water (During the middle ages, collapsible silver cups were routinely given to military officers for drinking purposes. Officers did not suffer the same rate of dysentery or disease as enlisted men. Members of the Nobility ate from "sterling" silverware and drank from "sterling" goblets. Sterling  is silver[92.5%] alloyed with copper [7.5%] for a harder more durable metal. The "Nobility" also survived the great plagues of Europe at a greater rate than the "commoners".) Water filter manufacturers, airlines, NASA, and others needing assurance of water "potability" routinely utilize silver bearing filtration systems for water purification.(28)
  • treat & prevent infections (silver compounds have routinely been introduced into the eyes of newborn babies to prevent potential gonnococal infection from the uterus.)
  • preserve foods (A "silver coin" was often placed in fresh milk by our pioneer ancestors to extend shelf life, especially in hot weather (20). In my experience  1tbsp of 10ppm colloidal silver [ per gallon] well shaken, will extend the shelf life of refrigerated [commercially available pasteurized ] milk by at least one week.
  •  speed healing of wounds or burns.(1)  I personally know a young woman who burned her leg while riding with her boyfriend on a motorcycle. The wound was open and bleeding on Friday, with apparent damage all the way to the bone. She refused to go to a Doctor (against the advice of friends and co-workers, including yours' truly), treating the wound instead with "topically applied" home-made 10ppm colloidal silver. By the next Tuesday, when I saw her again, the wound had healed to a point where it was almost un-noticeable. The last time I saw her (six months later), she had a darkening of the skin where the burn had been, but no other scarring, and no related pain or other complaints.

In 1893,  C. Von Nageli reported the first systematic "investigation into the lethal effects of metals [especially silver] towards bacteria and lower life forms.... To primitive life forms oligodynamic silver is as toxic as the most powerful chemical disinfectants and this, coupled with its relative harmlessness to [animal] life, gives it great potential as a disinfectant.... The term 'oligodynamic '[silver refers to] solutions in which the metal ion concentration is many orders of magnitude below that which would be lethal to higher life forms."(24)

From roughly the turn of the century (1900) to about 1938 (ending the pre-"modern antibiotic period") marked by the introduction of penicillin, sulfa drugs, and similar anti-biotics, silver and silver compounds were the mainstay(s) of medical treatment worldwide. Their uses included treatment for literally hundreds of ailments.

In 1939 "Hill and Pillsbury" (both MD's) in their book " Argyria - The Pharmacology of Silver" listed 94 different proprietary Silver preparations, (15) which were used to treat ailments such as:

  • burns, cuts, wounds, leg ulcers, pustular eczema, impetigo and boils (19)
  •  lung infections such as pleurisy, pneumonia, and tuberculosis (17)
  •  sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis and gonorrhea (including gonnococal eye infection of newborn infants)  (19)
  •  acute meningitis and epidemic cerebro-spinal meningitis and tonsillitis (17)
  •  infectious diseases including cystitis, erysipelas, mediterranean fever,  typhus and typhoid fever (17)
  • eye disorders such as blepharitis, corneal ulcers, conjunctivitis and dacryocystitis (5)
  • various forms of septicemia, including puerperal fever, peritonitis and post-abortion septicemia (17,5).

This example is only a small component of the "pre-1938" list of internationally accepted uses for silver and silver compounds.

"Hill and Pillsbury" (both MD's) in their book " Argyria - The Pharmacology of Silver" (15) documented 239 cases of Argyria, a medically benign, but cosmetic bluing of the dermal layer of the skin. Cases are most commonly associated with the ingestion of "silver compounds" as opposed to electrically generated colloidal silver. This condition can range from mild to severe, with proportionate social consequences. Bear in mind, they ONLY documented 239 cases of Argyria at a time when silver compounds were in widespread (think international) use.

Maximum allowed daily intake of silver, for a lifetime, 170# individual, 14 teaspoons...5ppm cs. This assumes a retention rate of 2% to 8% of daily intake. (12).

Re: Argyria..."Although the deposition of silver is permanent, it is not associated with
any adverse health effects. No pathologic changes or inflammatory reactions have  been shown to result from silver deposition. Silver compounds have been employed for medical uses for centuries" (12)

Re: Cancer..."No evidence of cancer in humans has been reported despite frequent  therapeutic use of the compound over the years. " (12)

The introduction of modern antibiotics such as sulfa drugs, penicillin, and specialized antibiotics has largely displaced silver compounds for medicinal purposes.

This doesn't mean silver "quit working", it just means other compounds "worked faster" or had a "greater profit potential".

The "chemical warfare" waged by modern man on bacterial pathogens has been so successful that most of humanity's historical plagues and some major infectious diseases had been virtually, if not totally eradicated by the late 1980's. Admittedly, this warfare included the use of  sophisticated antibiotics, widespread vaccinations, pest control, and improved sanitation for most of mankind.

By the latter part of the 1980's, pharmaceutical manufacturers and medical researchers had diverted much of their research effort away from the development of new antibiotics. I think this was motivated by a belief that profits and need were greater elsewhere. (There is even a body of evidence to suggest that their decisions were justifiable, at the time.)

In the 1990's the perception that mankind had triumphed over disease  began to change. HIV was in full swing, with no apparent anti-biotic treatment available to the afflicted. Common water-borne pathogens began showing some (qualified) immunity to chlorine [chlorine still controls them, but significantly higher concentrations are required]. We even began to see the implementation of "chloramine" mfg link as a disinfection agent in municipal water treatment plants to combat these new strains of  water-borne pathogens.

The previous 40 years of widespread antibiotic use (and misuse), in both feed animals and humans, had led to mutations in many pathogenic microbes, rendering their species resistant if not outright immune to conventional antibiotic treatments. These species include (but are not limited to) "killer" E. coli, "flesh-eating" strep A bacteria, various strains of antibiotic-resistant tuberculosis bacteria and chloroguine-resistant malarial parasites (2,11)

Medical literature  indicates that various forms of Silver, often at relatively low concentrations,  kill known antibiotic resistant germs (3,4,14,29). (note...most of the test results are "in vitro" [in the test tube] as opposed to in vivo [in the body]...your body is not a test tube, but there are similarities in the way microbes react.)

In the author's opinion, misuse of antibiotics includes:

  • The addition of antibiotics to the feed of "well animals" to prevent illness and improve profits (according to the "Union Of Concerned Scientists" 2003 spring quarterly report, 24 million pounds of anti-biotics were used for this purpose in 2002)
  • Antibiotic Prescriptions for viral conditions, when the Physician knows there will be no direct effect on the virus (pathogen) and no secondary infection is presented. (Medicine is a business: Patients demand, Physicians relent, money changes hands)
  • Patient(s) taking partial antibiotic doses (stopping the treatment when the symptoms abate, rather than taking the full dose...this leads to the following form of abuse)
  • Patients "sharing" prescription antibiotics, to treat conditions for which the antibiotic in question may be inappropriate. (The "friend", "lover", whatever, had some "left over" so "why not?")
  • The use of antibiotics for "prophylactic" purposes when exposure to the pathogen is not assured. (Like giving "Cypro" to people who have no known exposure to anthrax. Hey, the President is just too important to expose to any risk, RIGHT?)

The problems caused by these types of activities have become so severe that ordinary germs like Staph aureus (common in hospitals) are now believed to be resistant to all antibiotics except vancomycin. (2,11)

According to the CDC, in 1992,(19 years ago...and I bet it's worse now) 13,300 patients in U.S. hospitals died  of bacterial infections that resisted antibiotics. (2)."

Thanks to widespread economic prosperity, (and nifty, thrifty jet turbines) which have fostered cheap air travel and a worldwide wave of tourism, we are seeing "micro-tourists' (bacterial and viral invaders) from some of the most exotic and remote parts of the world, right here at home. This invasion is given a meaningful "boost" by relaxed import/export laws worldwide, including those in our own hemisphere (think NAFTA).  Easily recognizable examples of this phenomenon include; Hepatitis (various strains outside the traditional a,b,c), Shigella (causes dysentery), Malaria, and  Ebola (from a lab in Maryland). [The Ebola guys were more micro "POWS" than tourists. Our inability to maintain secure micro-jails just adds an additional dimension of people to blame, rather than a meaningful change in our societal level of security.]

One of the very real situations that we are dealing with in today's world is the possibility of Bioterrorism. This is not "something that 'can happen' , it's something that 'has happened' and probably 'will happen again'. Nothing cries out more dramatically for an effective broad spectrum antibiotic than the prospect of biological pathogens "engineered" for antibiotic resistance. We have already experienced "anthrax "attacks on our own soil, and who knows what will come next.

It is interesting to note that silver - both in liquid solution and as an aerosol - has been shown since 1887 to be extremely toxic to Anthrax spores (1,14,17,29).

Most antibiotics work well against only a few different diseases. Broad-spectrum antibiotics may kill several types of bacteria, 20 or so is common. Many antibiotics appear to be highly specific, killing pathogens in a single "family" such as yeast/fungal, and leaving other "families" of pathogens alone. Few, if any, antibiotics have an effect on viruses.

Among anti-microbal agents, silver stands alone. Claims exist that it kills 650 different disease causing (pathogenic) organisms (29). Unlike conventional antibiotics, silver kills pathogens of all major types: gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, spore-forming bacteria, fungus/yeasts, viruses and protozoal parasites.(6,8,14,17,29 ). (note...most of the test results are "in vitro" [in the test tube] as opposed to in vivo [in the body]...your body is not a test tube, but there are similarities in the way microbes react.)

This broad spectrum of action appears to relate to the notion that pathogenic bacteria and viruses are anaerobic. That is, they survive best in a low oxygen environment. They also appear to use a similar oxygen transfer mechanism in their exterior cell wall (or shell)

When the exterior cell wall comes in contact with a particle of silver, the oxygen transfer enzyme in the exterior cell wall is de-activated, causing the pathogen to suffocate.

The effectiveness of any silver compound (for pathogen control) depends on direct contact between silver and pathogen. This notion implies that particle size is a significant factor. Smaller particles will get into places where larger particles will not. Further, the author believes that surface contact area is also a big factor. Of course, particle dispersion is also a meaningful factor. Un-dispersed particles, of any size, would appear to be less than effective in controlling pathogens, particularly if those pathogenic organisms are even somewhat dispersed within a liquid.

These two notions, taken together with the size difference between bacteria and viruses would imply that larger particles should work best against bacteria and smaller particles would work best against viruses. This assumes a relatively equal level of particle dispersion within the vehicle liquid.

Electrically-generated colloidal silver, at concentrations ranging from 2.2ppm(parts per million) to 5.9ppm, has been shown to kill cysts of common water-borne protozoal parasites such as  Entamoeba histolytica, Paramecium, Varicella (1,19).

Electrically-generated colloidal silver, at a concentration of 15 ppb (parts per billion) demonstrated a degree of effectiveness against  Poliovirus in swimming pool water.  (25).

Electrically-generated colloidal silver, at an unknown concentration, was reported by the Orem Herald in 1992, to be effective against HIV. an excerpt from the article follows.

"The small glass vial is filled with clear liquid resembling water. But an Orem resident is convinced it contains the cure for AIDS. "I don't have a doubt in my mind. It's what eats me alive at night," says Daryle Tichy.
    Suspended in the liquid, which is mostly distilled water, are ultrafine particles of positively charged silver. By researching within several different sciences, Tichy has determined that the solution will kill the AIDS virus without harming the human body.
    Tichy, a full time member of the administrative staff at Brigham Young University's physical plant, said he considers himself a searcher, not a researcher. He looks for patterns and answers to problems by crossing the boundaries of different disciplines such as physics and medicine...
    Tichy said he had the material tested at two different labs; results showed the solution killed a variety of pathogens, including the HIV virus.

.Electrically generated colloidal silver is currently available from many sources. Advertised potencies range from roughly 3ppm up through 500 ppm.

 "Parts Per Million" [ppm] is a proportion, by weight, which has nothing to do with the number of individual particles.

 Concentrations of greater than 50ppm may (and probably do) contain larger particles, due in part to the tendency of the particles to clump together, or aggregate, over time, The larger particles..using "straight line logic" will probably be less effective against smaller pathogens such as viruses. Additionally, using anecdotal evidence as a guide, larger particles will probably create additional risk of argyria.

It is difficult, if not impossible for the average consumer to independently determine the strength of an "over the counter" colloidal silver suspension. Inexpensive testing devices (a.k.a.  "tds meters") are not accurate when testing silver colloids (just ask the experts at "Hanna", like I did.) Lab tests can run $35.00 to $300.00 per sample.

The consumer's option appears to be to accept the manufacturer's label, bearing in mind that the manufacturer is not being held to any particular standard of accountability by anybody.

My recommendation, is to generate Colloidal Silver for yourself.

You control the process.

You determine the strength, and by the type of generator you have elected to use, you determine the particle size, or range of sizes that are being generated.

As a colloidal liquid, the silver is not dissolved.

  •  The microscopic particles of silver are suspended within the liquid medium (water).
  •  They are held in suspension by the  electromagnetic force of the molecules of water.
  •  Conventional Colloidal silver will normally contain particles ranging in size from 1 nanometer (billionth of a meter) to around 7000 nanometers (7 micrometers) (1 micrometer = 1 micron=1000 nanometers).
  • These particles, stored away from electromagnetic fields, sunlight, and extremes of temperature, may stay in suspension for years.
  • Ultra Small (Ultra-fine) Colloidal Silver should contain particles ranging from .25 nanometers to 6 or 7 nanometers. These particles will include "ions" which are silver atoms, missing one electron.
  • These Ultra Small particles, stored away from electromagnetic fields, sunlight, and extremes of temperature, will remain effective for a period of months. The relatively short storage duration is due to size and chemical activity of the particles. Smaller particles loose their charge(s) easier, and bond to other materials more quickly.

As storage times increase, the particles have a tendency to stick together, growing larger, and eventually dropping out of suspension. Some of the particles will also stick to the insides of the vessel in which they are contained.

  • This is true of glass, but in glass the problem is minor.
  • Storage in plastic, any plastic, is counter productive because plastics have a minor electrical surface charge which causes rapid aggregation of the silver particles along with the tendency to electroplate themselves to the plastic.
  • Storage in metal containers is even less productive than in plastic, for obvious reasons.
  • Regardless of the material used in the storage container, stored colloidal silver ALWAYS has larger particles than it had when it was made.

The smaller and lighter the particles are, the greater the problem of aggregation and electroplating becomes.

Smaller, lighter particles are more desirable for pathogen control, but harder to store. In a retail setting, shorter shelf life translates into either ineffective products, or products containing stabilizers.

The commercial retail manufacturer will choose what stabilizers to use (if any), frequently without listing or mentioning them....bear in mind, the stabilizers have been classified as "inactive ingredients" contained within a "dietary supplement", if they are present at all.


  • You can generate, at home (at nominal expense), colloidal silver with a particle size range of "less than 1 nanometer to 6 nanometers".
  • You can generate, at home (at nominal expense),  a Conventional Colloidal Silver suspension, with particle sizes ranging from 1 nanometer to 4000 nanometers.
  • You can know what you've got because you made it yourself.

The author recognizes no reason to risk using any over-the -counter colloidal silver when you can make it yourself and KNOW It's Safe!


Nothing in life is without risk. If colloidal silver fixed everything, we would not have a multi billion dollar drug industry...however, the existence of a multi billion dollar drug industry does not preclude the possibility of benefits being derived from colloidal silver usage.

The following bits of information will lead an average person to an understanding of the FDA refusal to place a "stamp of approval" on colloidal silver.

  1. Any knowledgeable person will tell you that some ailments are simply  unaffected by colloidal silver. (20)
  2. Due to the fact that even minor variations in manufacturing techniques or conditions can make a difference in the "quality" or "strength" of a batch of colloidal silver, precise dosage information is hard to come by.
  3. Different people react differently to Colloidal Silver. Something that is effective for me may not work very well for you, and vice versa.

    When you are sick, You really don't care if the remedy works for me as long as it works for you.

  4. Medical Professionals DEPEND on CONSISTENT RESULTS when treating masses of people.

These facts:

  • Silver is not patentable
  • People can make colloidal silver at home
  • Dietary supplements & home remedies are hard to regulate
  • Drug companies do not make any money off the sale of Colloidal Silver
  • Colloidal silver ingestion may improve the health of individuals enough to "cut into" drug company profits
  • Drug company fees (appear to) "pay the bills" at the FDA.

may lead some people to suspect a degree of "bias" in the way that the FDA deals with colloidal silver.

Each person will need to make his/her own decision on what uses are appropriate for colloidal silver, and what the risks are. Please see our usage precautions.

Apart from the "monetary" reasons facing the FDA, there is a very real reason to use colloidal silver and silver compounds with caution.

That reason is Argyria, a medically benign (12) but cosmetically ugly result from misuse of silver compounds. Argyria is most commonly associated with the ingestion of silver compounds, but in rare instances has been associated with ingesting large quantities of Colloidal Silver. (Typically made with contaminated water and inferior equipment.)

Some simple precautions, as follows, will help minimize the risk:

  • Do not use Silver Nitrate internally ...it carries the highest reported risk of Argyria.
  • Do not use Silver or Mild Silver Proteins for extended periods without taking "breaks".
  • Do not take oral or nasal doses of silver compounds on an ongoing basis without the supervision of a knowledgeable medical professional.
  • It would appear wise to supplement one's diet with selenium and vitamin e, during and after periods that you choose to supplement with Colloidal Silver.
  • When consulting your physician, always give him/her all the facts. No man's (woman's) judgment is any better than his/her knowledge of the facts. (you're paying 'em, get your money's worth.)


I recently found an article on the "web" regarding an individual who reportedly "cured" his self induced argyria.(30)

The "cure" he used is detailed below, just as it came from the website. I have no real frame of reference regarding the validity of his statements, but here is the information...use it as you will.

A Cure for Argyria: The Formula

3 Vitamin E 1000 mg 100% Natural d-alpha Tocopheryl
1 Selenium 100mcg yeast free
2 vegetarian Vitamin C 1000 mg
1 teaspoon MSM organic
1 super potency Vitamin B 100,
1 teaspoon of Kelp powder:

Taken every morning with 2 16oz glasses of water, with close to 3/4 of a gallon distilled water a day. This procedure may take from several weeks to several months to be totally effective, depending upon the severity of the Argyria.

Numerous researchers and various research projects have detected a "link" between silver and "selenium". We have heard from endriconologists that their patients who are "silver toxic" are also "selenium deficient". It would also appear that people exhibiting "selenium toxicity" have little, if any detectable silver in their systems.

From this data I have concluded that a balance of silver and selenium is necessary in the human system for good health, and that one symptom of such an imbalance is Argyria.
